Little Hallingbury Mill is licenced to hold wedding ceremonies under Uttlesford District Council. We can seat up to 40 guests which includes children. If you already have a date in mind, we would strongly recommend that you contact us to see if your chosen date is available and make a provisional booking to hold your date. You then need to contact Essex Registration Service at Uttlesford District Council to ensure that the registrars who will conduct your ceremony are able to fulfil your chosen date and time.
The ceremony itself is held in our beautiful bistro. All the chairs and tables are removed and replaced with covered banqueting chairs (plain white covers) and the bar is draped off. You are free to decorate the bistro to tie in with your colour scheme. Many brides choose to have a couple of floral arrangements in the bistro – one for the signing table and on the bar. These can then be transferred to the wedding breakfast tables if desired. Candles, scented and plain as well as bunting and floral displays all help to create a special personal ambience to The Mill.
The one thing that we ask all our couples to do, is break away from convention if you want to. The Mill provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxed day with no pressures. If you want to have your children as part of the ceremony, it’s not a problem. If you don’t want speeches or wedding cake, don’t do it! The day is about you and your partner and what you want as a couple to share with your family and friends.
Toasts and Canapes
After the ceremony, our newlyweds usually opt for a celebratory toast. Popular choices are Prosecco and Champagne, with jugs of Pimms being very popular in the summer. Pimms also looks great served in our mini milk bottles with straws – a nostalgic talking point!
We can offer mouthwatering canapes to share amongst yourselves and your guests while you enjoy capturing special photographic moments.
The weather unfortunately we cannot guarantee! However, with our bistro and upstairs dining area, we have plenty of space for your guests should the weather take a turn. With sunny weather you can enjoy the use of our private garden and area by the stream. We also marquee hire from £450.
Wedding Day Photography
The Mill has seen several photographers over the years and there have been some exceptional photographers. One photography business which has frequented the Mill on numerous occasions are Pavone Photography also known as Sam and Louise.
As frequent photographers at The Mill, they know the venue inside out, the ground, the angles, the daytime and evening lighting, how to get great group and ceremony shots. We are not commission linked to any of our suppliers and we do not recommend businesses who we have had no history with.
We also have lots of photos on our Facebook page – please click here
The Wedding Breakfast
Once your photos and drinks reception come to an end, it is then time to be seated for your wedding breakfast. Although we can offer set packages which are preferred by some of our couples as it takes away some of the difficult decision making, we are more than happy to make your food choices bespoke for you.
We love to hear your ideas and have we in the past served afternoon tea, hosted a mad hatters tea party, carvery and curry to name but a few.
We can currently seat up to 40 guests (this includes children). Tableware as standard includes cutlery, white cotton napkins, white tablecloths, table water, tables glasses and wine glasses.
Small floral arrangements on the tables are always very popular and we have lots of gallery photos showing some of the beautiful creations which we have seen at the Mill. The tables can be dressed as you like, but we would recommend not to over fill with objects as you will need space for plates, glasses etc. Candelabras, Table Runners, Table Confetti and Favours are popular choices.
Popular colour schemes for weddings at the Mill have been pretty pastels which lend themselves perfectly to the venue and backdrop. One of our brides opted for black white theme which looked simply stunning.
If you really do not want the stress of choosing decorations and colour schemes, we will be more than happy to provide a neutral shabby chic backdrop to complement your day.
Some of the services that we offer include:
Full Ceiling Tenting in our upstairs restaurant including the pillar uprights and fairy lights – £450
Candelabra Package – 1 x Oversized 4ft Candelabra plus 8 x 5 Arm Chandeliers and candles – £100
Coloured Chair Covers for the Ceremony Chairs (White are included in the price as standard) – £3 per chair cover
Ceremony Arch decorated with neutral artificial flowers, voile and fairy lights – £50
Set up of Table Decorations, Favours and Runners – supplied by you – £100
There are many local companies who offer venue decoration services and prop hire. For those who do not wish to employ a professional, there are many high street and online retailers who cater specifically in shabby chic, rustic wedding decorations. We can be as involved as you like or sit back and take the lead from you.
Many of our brides opt for wedding cake. We would highly recommend that you research cake suppliers carefully before committing. We have seen some very expensive cakes which have been very disappointing when cut. ( A couple of cakes have literally fallen apart).
If the cake is cut as part of the wedding breakfast, it can then be portioned and served later with an evening buffet. A lovely way to ensure that all your guests have the opportunity to receive a piece.
We have seen a mixture of cake styles, but 3 tier cakes with different flavour tiers tended to be the most popular. Rather than a traditional fruit cake, flavours such as red velvet, madeira and chocolate have featured. Cupcakes are also a popular option as you can control the amount you need as you only need order as many cakes as there are guests which helps reduce wastage.
All our couples are free to use our bespoke wooden log cake stand which was very kindly donated to us by Donna and Andy who held their wedding with us in May 2014.
Evening Entertainment & Bar
As part of your evening entertainment, we can offer a buffet from £15 per head. Many couples also choose to have a DJ as part of their evening package. The Mill’s preferred DJ is a company called Uptown who we have been using and recommending for many years.
If you are on a budget or don’t want to have a DJ, we offer the use of our in house lighting and music system for small hire charge. This allows you to create your own playlists which you pre-select through a Spotify internet music account.
The bar and premises are licensed until 12pm. We can apply for a special licence to extend the evening, however there is an additional charge for this and is by prior agreement.
We have seen string quartets, magicians and live singers turn an evening into a very memorable evening. One of our observations is that one of the keys to a successful evening will often hinge on your choice of music and your guests. Try and select ‘crowd pleasing’ entertainment and music to try and get your guests of all ages involved.
We currently have 13 bedrooms which consist of doubles, singles and family rooms which we can offer to your guests at a special reduced rate. If you have lots of guests wishing to stay, we are more than happy to recommend our local bed and breakfasts in the village of Little Hallingbury which is a 2 minute drive from The Mill.
The Morning After
Invite your guests to enjoy a freshly cooked full english breakfast for just £7.50 per head. We use good quality locally sourced ingredients including free range eggs and our butcher’s sausages. A lovely way to have a recap of your day and say your farewells in a relaxed, informal way.
